Membership Categories
  • BCRMTA member - lives within 80 km of an established branch.
  • Provincial BCRMTA member – lives more than 80 from a branch.
  • International BCRMTA member – lives outside of Canada and is a Canadian citizen or has Permanent Resident status.
  • Multijurisdictional BCRMTA member – belongs to more than one provincial/territorial RMT association.
  • Student teacher Auxiliary (STA) – member who is working on completing the requirements for membership with a current RMT. Fourteen branches in BC accept student teachers as auxiliary members.

All members are listed on the BCRMTA website with their name and contact information of their choosing: phone number, email address, and/or personal website.

Requirements

Please read the following info carefully to ensure the requirements for submission are met and all necessary documents are included with your application form. 

  • Membership is open to any person who is 18 years of age or older with the following qualifications:
    • Music teacher’s diploma from a conservatory of music recognized by the BCRMTA Provincial Council (i.e.: The Royal Conservatory, Conservatory Canada, BC Conservatory, Victoria Conservatory) in the instrument of subject of instruction stated in the application form.
    • Performance diploma from a conservatory of music in the instrument or subject of instruction stated in the application form AND proof of four years teaching experience.
    • Music Teacher Degree (four-year program) from a school of music or university recognized by the BCRMTA Provincial Council, in the instrument or subject of instruction stated on the application form.
    • Performance Degree (four-year program) from a school of music or university recognized by the BCRMTA Provincial Council, in the instrument or subject of instruction stated on the application form AND proof of four years teaching experience.
  • A member may transfer from a Registered Teachers’ Association in another province.
  • If the Registrar needs clarification regarding the qualifications presented by an applicant, the registrar may refer the application to the Board of Examiners. Applicants may be asked to send additional information about their education and/or work experience i.e.: university transcripts, letters of referral, employment contracts, etc.
  • Proof of age and/or citizenship need not be submitted but may be requested.
