The history of the BCRMTA dates back more than 100 years. The first seeds were planted in November 1920, when a group of music teachers met in Vancouver to form the Vancouver Music Teachers’ Association. Over the next few years, the group expanded to include teachers throughout the lower mainland. In 1932, the various Branches joined together to form the BC Registered Music Teachers’ Association. 1935 was another seminal year as the BCRMTA joined with Associations from Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba to found the Federation of Music Teachers' Associations - later called the Canadian Federation of Registered Music Teachers' Association or CFMTA.
In 1947 the BC Registered Music Teachers' Association received a Provincial Legislative Charter and the Bylaws of the Association were set up according to the provisions of Section 10 of An Act Respecting British Columbia Registered Music Teachers' Association. Throughout the second half of the 20th century, the CFMTA continued to expand and it now includes all ten Provinces as well as the Yukon and Northwest Territories. The BCRMTA was instrumental in the formation of this national Association, and we look forward to carrying on our venerable legacy for many years to come.
